Latvia

The small country of Latvia is located in north-western Europe on the Baltic Sea and Gulf of Riga, which lie to the west and north.  It shares borders with the Estonia to the north, Russia to the east, Belarus and Lithuania to the south. The country is mainly comprised of fertile land with areas of hills and lakes.  The main rivers include the Lielupe, Daugava, Salaca and Gauja.

Riga is the largest city and capital of the country and a large percentage of the population lives in and around the capital. Other large cities include Liepaja and Daugavpils.  The currency is the Lats.  The official language is Latvian, with Russian and Lithuanian also spoken.  Latvia has been a member of the United Nations since 1991 and joined the EU and NATO in 2004.

The Baltic Sea coast and Gulf of Riga are popular destinations with the city ports of Riga, Liepaja and Ventspils. There are miles of coastline where you can find space for yourself, but if you like to be with other people to enjoy the white sandy beaches then head for Liepaja or Ventspils.  Boating activities are very popular in Latvia as there is so much coastline, and many lakes and rivers.  You could just explore the quaint fishing villages and stroll on the sandy beaches. A large part of the coastline is protected and contains many species of wildlife which includes wolves, lynx, moose, elk and beavers.  It is also a good place for bird-watching along the coastal areas, especially during migration times and there are many special places that are set up for the best viewing.  You might be lucky to find a piece of amber washed on the beach.   The country has many beautiful parks, rivers, lakes and forests.

Riga

Latvia’s capital city of Riga is located on the Baltic Sea. The city is divided by the river Daugava. The Old Town section of Riga is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.  It lies inside a circular moat and park and includes historic Riga Castle, Parliament building and 13-16th century Cathedral. Riga Castle was built in the 13th century but rebuilt many times, changing its appearance.  The castle today also houses several museums.

The medieval Old Town is best explored on foot with its cobble stone streets and interesting architecture.  There are plenty of places to dine or sit and people-watch. Riga was at one time a very important port city and centre for trade and a member of the Hanseatic League.  Many grand buildings in Art Nouveau style have been renovated and tell of the city’s former prominence and wealth.

Music is very important in Latvia, and you will find that there are many festivals and concerts around the city, as well as choirs and operas.  You might be lucky to hear some beautiful classic played on the pipe organ in the Dome Cathedral.

There are museums which tell of Latvia’s turbulent history and struggle for independence, as well as many art galleries. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union Riga has changed, shaking off the era of Soviet oppression and become an increasingly popular destination.  To learn about the history you can visit the Latvian Occupation Museum.

The huge covered market located inside authentic old zeppelin hangars is worth a visit.  Riga is a good place to base yourself because most parts of the country can be reached by a day trip from the capital.

If you want to spend some time soaking up the sun on the beach, then head for the Jurmala (beach). The Jurmala was at one time very popular with the Russian Czar and other famous and wealthy Russian people.  Or you could find some pampering and rejuvenation at one of the health spas.

There is plenty of nightlife in Riga with many bars, restaurants and nightclubs.   During the summer months there are many street cafes and outdoor beer gardens.  Riga also has its own zoo.  Public transport in Riga includes buses, trolleybuses, trams and taxis.
