Czech RepublicLocated in central eastern Europe, the Czech Republic is a landlocked country bordered by Germany to the east, Poland to the north, Austria to the south, and Slovakia to the south-east. After the ‘Velvet Revolution and Divorce’ In January 1993 the former communist Czechoslovakia was divided into the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic. Since that time the country has attracted many tourists, especially to its beautiful capital city of Prague. Outside Prague there are many other lovely and fascinating medieval towns and cities to visit, as well as castles, spa towns, vineyards, caves. The area is known for its wines, beers and breweries. Tourists travel there to admire the many wonderful aspects of the country, including its varied architectural styles and beautiful buildings. Prague joined the EU in 2004 and NATO in 1999. The official language is Czech, and the currency is the Koruna. Since the fall of the communist regime Prague has become a very popular tourist destination for its beauty and many historical sites and monuments. Many of the most popular attractions are located in the historical centre of Prague but others are in the ‘new town’ area. There is more to see and do in Prague than you can achieve in one or two days. On most visitors’ to do lists will be Prague Castle - which overlooks the city, the cathedral, Convent, the square in the Old Town, Petrin Viewing Hill, the Powder Tower, the maze, the old Town Hall and astronomical clock, Jewish Ghetto, and the14th century Charles Bridge. Franz Kafka was a resident of Prague and there is a museum about his life. He is also buried there. Today’s Prague is alive with creativity and music, with many cultural events taking place on a regular basis, and a lively nightlife and restaurant scene.
